Search Engine Results Pages, SERPs

4 key elements

• Title: An accurate and concise heading of the page's content.
  • Source: The value provided in the <title> tag.
  • Format: It is recomended to include the brand name at the end of a page title a forward slash, /, delimiter. for example, Accelerator / Surround Technologies, LLC. For pages about a topic that is within a larger group or topic such as a product in a product category A common and recomended optimal format of a Page Title is "Primary Keyword - Secondary Keyword | Brand Name". For example, Open Generation Technology - Accelerator / Surround Technologies, LLC
  • Length: Titles in search results cut off typically after 50-60 charachters. The length is based on pixels and so varies based on the charachters displayed.
• url: The canonical address of the page.
  • Source: The website physical url. May be replaced by the href value in the <link rel="canonical" href="…"> if available.
  • Format: It is recomended to use verbose urls that accurately convey the page's content replacing spaces with a dash (-) in place of the spaces and not using special charachters or punctuation.
• Description: An accurate and concise explanation of the content of the web page.
• Image (Thumbnail): Most search engines do not display an image. If they do, it is displayed as a small thumbnail.
• Source: Usually pulled from the Open Graph Meta, <meta property="og:image" …, value if it is specified in the meta data.

Search Engine Ranking vs. Results Pages

Google and most other search engines have stated that neither meta descriptions nor meta keywords factor into their ranking algorithms. They are, however, displayed in the search results. this means they should be crafted for human eyes and not search engine ranking or machine automation.

Social Cards

Social Cards is what we at Surround use when referring to what a web page will look like when it is shared within a social network such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, Twitter, Pinterest, Reddit, etc. Meta data can be defined within a web page's code to provide a social network with the information to include when the page is shared and is an important aspect to optimizing that experience. It makes it significantly easier for the user to do the share.

Sharing: Without the meta data, the social network will do it's best to fill in the blanks, but ultimately leaves it up to the user to complete and correct it. This means more effort and subsequent frustration for the user decreasing the liklihood they will share it. It also means that either the social network or the user is in control of the message that page portrays, not you.

Reading the share: Depending on how well the social network or the user did to complete the information in the share, will affect the experience of those that read the share and what actions they may take, such as clicking through to read more or re-sharing. Ultimately, this share may be that users first impression of the page or product you are hoping they click-through to.

The good news is that social networks want their users to have a good experience too. They assist in this by giving page developers the ability to improve how their pages look when shared. This is done through meta data.

3 key elements

There are 3 key elements to displaying in Social and

• Title: An accurate and concise heading of the page's content.
  • Quotes cut off Titles
• Description: An accurate and concise explanation of the content of the web page.
  • Ad Copy: This tag serves as advertising copy for the web page, especially when the image is not shown. It draws people to the web page from both Search Engine Results pages, SERPs, and from the social network share. Crafting a readable, compelling description using important keywords can improve the click-through rate for a given webpage. Also, to maximize click-through rates on SERPs, it's important to note that Google and other search engines bold keywords in the description when they match search queries.
  • Duplicate Meta Descriptions: As with title tags, it is important that meta descriptions on each page be unique.

Card-based Design Pattern

Card-based design has its roots in catalog e-commerce systems, but the usage for other content started skyrocketing in 2013 and has become a mainstay for web design today especially for mobile interfaces. Cards are an effective and easy way to fit varying types of content on different types and sizes of screen and display it across all platforms using the same design style.

The card design provides both a familiar and comfortable user interface and a way to logically encapsulate bits of information for development. The user experience dates back long before computers with business cards, calling cards, greeting cards, playing cards, etc. User can easily browse vast amounts of cards and pick out the ones they are interested in. Print magazines include advertisement cards inside the magazines. These cards are not fastened to the magazine as there purpose is to fall out and force the user to react to it. They may pick it up and toss it away or take the time to look at it. Either way, they reacted to it and saw something with it, even if but a glimpse. That is more than may occur with an add on the page. I did the same thing when I graduated college. I included a business card with every resume I sent out. It worked too. On most of my interviews when I handed them another card, they recalled that I had one in with my resume.

Types of Social Network Meta-data

Meta tags have been used in the Head of website pages early in the beginning of the web. They were originally used to provide additional information about the web page to help search engines understand the content of the page. While relatively unimportant to search engine ranking these days, these tags are used to support both information and instruction to search engines and can be extremely important in gaining user click-through from the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs). With the advent of social networking, there was a need to enable a web page to provide additional details about its contents to better structure how it was displayed when shared within the network. Primarily, social networks are looking for the page title, a brief description of the page, and a thumbnail image. Some also look for additional information such as the type of content such as video or book, and then additional information based on that type.

Standard Meta Tags: These are the original meta tags that have been around since the beginning of the Web. There are lots of these tags. For the purposes of Social Networking, we are concerned with just a few.

• <title> – The title tag is a required HTML element that specifies the title of a web page. It is used for the title of the page in the browser and when added to favorites. It is also used on search engine results pages, typically as a clickable headline, for a given result and as the fall-back title of the page when shared in social networks.

• <link rel="canonical" … –

Schem.org microdata: A collection of vocabularies and formats site developers can use to mark up their pages in ways that can be understood by search engines. It is important to include the microdata for search, but it is relatively unused by social networks. Google, a strong proponent of Schema.org, recommends it's use, but uses Open Graph for the title, image and description if it is available.

Open Graph protocol: Originally created by Facebook OGP has been adopted by the vast majority of social networks. The objective of the protocol is to give developers one thing to implement to richly represent any web page within a social graph. The http://ogp.me/ website provides great information about this.
